Mazda Tanken is a Diploma Project by Anthony Sims from California’s Art Center College of Design. Dynamic coupe-style SUV pays a tribute to the American nature. Using the language of forms Nagare (the current design philosophy of Mazda), Anthony tried to create “a fearless explorer of America.” In his work he was inspired by the beautiful photographs of Ansel Adams. After having defined with the Tanken’s general outlines, designer has chosen the layout of Mazda CX-7 as the basis. However, the future Mazda will have a hybrid drive: a small 4-cylinder engine charges the batteries, built-in the bottom of the car and its side steps. Those batteries, in turn, provide the electric motors with the energy. The main theme of the interior is air. The designer used a “floating” surfaces and the underlying functional elements.
