The 2013 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a considerable reworking of the automaker’s flagship sedan. The brand’s standard-bearer introduces several new safety systems. Thus Mercedes is to reestablish itself as a safety leader, yet focalizing on the efficiency. So what does the new model get? I guess one of the most notable safety features is the “braking bag” which is located between the front wheels. As a matter of fact, when the crash happens, the bag inflates while pushing the metal plate onto the ground in order to slow down the car. A new set of seat-mounted side airbags is also included. The airbag-equipped seatbelts are offered as optional.

The upcoming sedan will be longer and feature the new aluminum-intensive unibody. The engine choices are: a twin-turbocharged V-8 and a new V-12. The Benz fans will be certainly glad to know that right after the S-class rolls out, the super stretched “Pullman” version, 267-inch-long will come out to replace the Maybach 57/62. The Pullman will be a rival to such models as Rolls-Royce Ghost and the Continental Flying Spur. If compared to the spy photos of the model seen over a year ago, the 2013 S-class is surely to take a new design direction. For example, the second side contour line which extends from the rear door handle to the rear quarter panel has gone away.

Expect the official presentation of the new S-Class at some major international auto show this year. The sedan will hit the road in 2014 priced at $90,000. The vehicle will enter into competition with Jaguar XJ, Audi A8, Porsche Panamera, and BMW 7-series.
