2012 Mercedes M-Class – Fatal Test Drive

One person was killed and another was injured in an accident, where 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class prototype was involved. An accident took place on the south-east of Germany near Rottweil town. 52-year-old Daimler test driver has knocked down the 26-year old driver, who has emerged from the car on the road. The Daimler driver was testing car, which has not yet appeared on the sale. The young man has died from the injuries.

According to the German Spiegel, the car accident has happened on the highway A81, which links Stuttgart and Singen.

According to the preliminary reports, a car of the young German car was on the road because of its breakage. Two other drivers stopped to help him, when Mercedes-Benz M-Class was coming up at a high speed. The SUV crashed into the cars, bumping one of the drivers, afterwards it overturned. The SUV’s speed was so high, that the car dragged about 75 meters on the roof after the hitting. As a result, 26-year-old driver has instantly died and 52-year-old test pilot was severely injured and hospitalized.

Other drivers were not affected: at the last moment both jumped over the highway fence. One of them has got only minor injuries during the fall. The police is investigating what happened and defining a guilty party. The total damage from the accident is estimated to be around 80 thousands of euros.

It is worth to note that this is not the first incident, which involves road test cars. In March 2010 a prototype of Pagani C9 was crashed during the road test in Stuttgart. The Italian test pilot has lost the control over the supercar and hit the crash barrier on a high speed. The driver has survived and was hospitalized with minor injuries.
